The plastic valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket are two of the most frequent leak points on BMW inline-six and V8 engines. Heat cycles cause these gaskets to shrink and crack over time, often showing up as an oily film on the back of the engine or a faint burning smell. Replacing both gaskets together typically costs a few hundred dollars and prevents oil from dripping onto nearby electrical connectors and hoses.
Oil pan gaskets and rear main seals sit lower on the engine and often reveal themselves through drips found directly under the car after it's been parked overnight. These leaks tend to worsen gradually, and because the pan or transmission sometimes needs to be lowered to reach them, labor is a bigger factor in the repair cost than parts. We always inspect the full underside of the engine to pinpoint the exact source before recommending a repair.
